NJ Hand Painted Signs

Sign painting is an American traditional craft deeply rooted in the industrial growth and commerce of our country. Prominent from the 1800s-1980s, the aesthetic of handpainted signs defined the look of business in every American city and town. The distinctiveness of handpainted signage was found in local markets, gas stations, factories, drug stores, and repair shops.

Hand painted signs were the way of introducing every product to the world that couldn’t speak for itself. That need became the calling for art that was distinctive, appealing, and stood out to consumers.  Sign painting embodies the handmade human to human connection.  That little skip in the paint, the way the brush hair ends a letter, or the way the colors layer on top of one another to create a texture no machine can reproduce, each sign is singular. Like all hand made items made of natural materials, they only become more beautiful with age and wear, telling the story of their resilience and yours. And with modern day material made to last

So if your business is rooted in craft and connecting to the community around you, let us tell your story.

The Process

We begin with discussing the function and aesthetic preferences for your sign. This includes size, color, and location (interior or exterior). For store fronts we will have to find out what is permitted within the town or city. Most signs we do are made of MDO exterior plywood. We use a specialized process to seal and waterproof  signs to withstand weathering.

The advantage of sign painting or hand lettering is it can be done on multiple surfaces and on a variety of materials:  brick, glass, metal, wood, and concrete. This access to more surfaces means more creative ways to get your message across, and eyes on what you want to communicate about your business or event.

Store Front Lettering

One of are favorite things to do it transform enter storefronts for an eye catching vintage or modern theme. There is nothing like the look of a hand painted window. Not only dose it show your customers the attention to detail that you have for your business, but it also shows that you are planning to put some roots down in the community your in. A storefront is your first impression to your community about who your business is before anyone ever steps inside. So making a clean eye catching clear message is the key to standing out and become “that spot”.

A-Frame / Sandwich Board Lettering

So A-frame Sandwich board / sidewalk signs have one purpose thats to grab the attention of someone walking on the sidewalk looking straight. Just shy of grabbing them by the collar theses sign tell the person about the shop that there in front of right now. Called A frame sighs- for the shape or Sandwich board signs- for the popularity of delis or Sidewalk signs- for where there placed. These signs can be made in many different ways. We mostly made them out of exterior grad wood with a metal bottom for protection. They can be made and cut to anything you’d like. Most town will have a detail about how and where these can be used.
